Principal Sin-itiro Tomonaga Talked about His Old Days
at the Festival of Tôkaryô Dorm,June 10,1962

On June 10, 1962, Professor Sin-itiro Tomonaga, then president of Tokyo University of Education, gave a lecture at the Tôkaryô Dorm Festival.
At that time, Mr. Shizuo Tsunogai (later professor at Hokkaido University) was a graduate student (second year of a master's course in Chemistry, Graduate School of Natural Science) and a student at Tôkaryô Dorm, and he used his part-time income to purchase a SONY tape recorder for 30,000 yen(about 83 dollars at the rate of the time), which was a high price at that time. Since it is a valuable tape recording, I am releasing it as an audio file instead of documenting it here.
Mr. Tsunogai is not an alumni member of TUE Newspaper, and this tape is being made available to the public through the kindness of Mr. Tsunogai.
The content of the article is mainly about memories of the past, and overlaps with the "Professor Sin-itiro Tomonaga Reminisced About His Old Days" on this site, so please refer to that site as well.
The recording is about 80 minutes long, and although we have tried to make it as light as possible as an mp3 file (bit rate 80kbps), it is still 22,809KB, so for the convenience of viewing and listening, we have divided it into 5 files, but we have also posted the unified file before the division.
If you click on each title, a new window will open and play automatically.
The explanation about the recording at the beginning of the audio is from Mr. Tsunogai himself at the time. The sound of a train sometimes heard in the middle of the audio is that of the Tôbu Tôjo Line.
President Tomonaga will step down after this.He stepped down from his position due to the election of the President held on June 15. Professor Tomoo Miwa will become the new president on June 16, so it can be said that this speech at the Dormitory Festival was the last brilliant close for Mr. Tomonaga and also the last glow of Tokyo University of Education. It could also be said that it showed the final glow of Tokyo University of Education. The so-called "Tomonaga era" of Tokyo University of Education came to an end here, and the university plunged into the struggle over the relocation to Tsukuba.
Tôkaryô Dorm is now "Itabashi Peace Park", and the "cafeteria" where the lecture was held is the one-story building on the left side of the picture of Tôkaryô Dorm (with the office). At that time, the road in front of Tôkaryô was an unpaved gravel road. The area around Tôkaryô has changed drastically, but when I visited there a few years ago, I was surprised to find that the building of Taihei-do, a simple cafeteria specializing in udon and soba noodles, which Tôkaryô students used to call "restaurant" with some irony, was still standing. Of course, the restaurant has been closed down and is now used as a private house, so no photos have been posted.

Mr.Shizuo Tsunogai Mr. Shizuo Tsunogai (Professor Emeritus of Hokkaido University, photo on the right) contacted me about providing the tape in an e-mail to the administrator on April 13, 2004, which read as follows
"Actually, when I was a graduate student, President Tomonaga gave a rakugo (comic storytelling) performance of his autobiography at the dormitory festival of Tôkaryô Dormitory. A comic story? A lecture? I recorded it myself. He talked about many episodes from his youth, and it was a good stimulus for the students. I was able to listen to the tape two years ago. If you are interested in collecting various materials, I can give them to you. However, I have left them in Sapporo, so it will take some time."
It was about seven years later, in January 2011, that we received a message that the tape had actually been brought back from Sapporo. In the email, he said he would give it to us, but we could not take something like a Tsunogai family heirloom, so we converted it into an audio file and returned the original to him.
Mr. Shizuo Tsunogai passed away on December 8, 2015, at the age of 78. When I visited him at his home in Wako, Saitama Prefecture, in January 2011 to borrow and return tapes, he was looking very healthy. We thank you for providing us with this tape and respectfully wish you the best of luck.
